Building Skills for Life: How Apprenticeships Support Growth at Property Care Ltd

Interview with Charlie Kerr, Managing Director, Property Care Ltd

(By Gemma Scrivener)

At Property Care Ltd, investing in apprenticeships is much more than filling roles, their approach helps develops people with the skills, mind-set and values needed for long-term success in the property and construction sector.

Currently employing two apprentices through ACE Training, Charlie (Property Maintenance Level 2) and Jake (Carpentry Level 3), the business sees apprenticeships as a vital part of its workforce strategy and future growth.

Why apprenticeships matter to Property Care

“As a successful property refurbishment and maintenance company, we have always believed in finding and developing young, motivated talent,” explains Managing Director Charlie Kerr.
“Working with ACE Training has given us the opportunity to bring Charlie and Jake into the business and develop them into skilled, qualified tradespeople who align with our values and long-term plans.”

Apprenticeships allow Property Care Ltd to shape talent from the ground up, embedding company culture, quality standards and work ethic from day one, while also building a workforce ready to meet future demand.

The business benefits of apprenticeships

From a business perspective, the impact has been clear. Apprentices bring fresh energy, adaptability and a willingness to learn, while funding and financial support help ensure a strong return on investment.

“Over time, apprentices become loyal team members who understand how the business operates,” says Charlie. “They develop real-world experience alongside technical skills, and as their confidence and capability grow, they become genuine assets to the business.”

This approach also supports retention, reduces recruitment costs and creates a sustainable talent pipeline which is increasingly important in an industry facing ongoing skills shortages.

Skills for Life – adding value on site

As part of National Apprenticeship Week, the focus on Skills for Life strongly reflects what Property Care Ltd sees day-to-day on site.

Throughout their apprenticeships, Charlie and Jake have developed practical, hands-on skills that directly contribute to productivity and efficiency. From site preparation and material handling to supporting daily operations and working as part of a wider site team, their input adds real value.

“They contribute to cost-effective working days and help keep projects moving,” Charlie explains.
“They are learning the importance of responsibility, time management and how to operate effectively in a live working environment. These are skills that will stay with them for life.”

Developing rounded individuals

Beyond technical ability, Property Care Ltd places strong emphasis on developing apprentices as people. “We see the best apprentices as those who grow holistically,” says Charlie.  “That means building confidence, communication skills, reliability, teamwork and the ability to see the bigger picture.”

Apprentices are exposed to a variety of tasks, mentored by experienced tradespeople and encouraged to think about planning, logistics, timelines and customer relationships. These softer skills are critical in property and construction, where collaboration, professionalism and trust are just as important as technical competence.

Addressing the industry skills gap

Employing apprentices also allows Property Care Ltd to play an active role in tackling the industry-wide skills gap. “Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to earn while you learn,” Charlie explains.
“They combine formal training with on-site experience and a real understanding of workplace culture.” For the business, this supports succession planning, strengthens retention and ensures future skills needs are met — all while safeguarding a reliable, capable workforce for years to come.

Support, mentoring and workplace culture

Creating the right environment is key to apprentice success. “Apprentices need to feel comfortable, supported and able to communicate openly,” says Charlie. “That’s where mentoring and workplace culture make all the difference.”

Regular check-ins, ongoing support and clear communication are embedded into the process, with close collaboration between the business, the apprentice and ACE Training. Kelly Clinkard, Property Care’s Training and Apprentice Manager, plays a crucial role in maintaining this link and ensuring apprentices feel supported throughout their journey.

Why ACE Training?

Property Care Ltd chose to work with ACE Training because of their local presence, breadth of trade courses and collaborative approach.“ ACE offered exactly what we needed,” says Charlie.
“Since partnering with them, we have built excellent working relationships, strong communication and a shared commitment to helping each apprentice reach their full potential.”

Advice to other employers

For businesses considering apprenticeships, Charlie’s advice is clear: “Be supportive and flexible, and make sure the apprenticeship aligns with your business needs. Communicate regularly, involve the wider team and set clear short-, mid- and long-term objectives.” Understanding the funding available and how apprenticeships support workforce planning can make a significant difference, not just to individual businesses, but to the future of the industry as a whole.
